Truly breaking free from Harry Potter’s Gryffindor-centric tradition, Hogwarts Legacy lets you choose your house at the beginning, which you’d think would shape your journey. It all begins right there with the Sorting Hat. The most maddening thing is that Hogwarts Legacy really dances around the peripheries of RPG stuff like meaningful choices and player agency it flirts with the idea that you’ll get to be the kind of wizard or witch you want to be in this most magical of settings. … but an RPG it ain’t ( despite what the marketing may tell you), which is a shame, because it fails to take advantage of a setting that feels so immaculately suited to ideas and systems that have existed in RPGs for years. It’s an open-world adventure, an action game, even a bit of a pet collector sim. It’s a breathtaking imagining of one of the most beloved and popular settings in all fiction, taking it to a time period that makes it feel refreshingly distinct from the characters and events of the source material.
